Backpacks of Love & Mirah's Closet Leadership Team

The Blue Ribbon Project is currently seeking dedicated individuals to be a part of it's Leadership Team and work specifically with our Backpacks of Love and Mirah's Closet Programs. Backpacks of Love are backpacks that contain emergency essentials for children who have to be removed from an abusive or neglectful environment. Backpacks of Love are age and gender specific and cover newborns to 17 years of age. A Backpack of Love is delivered to the child when they are being removed for their safety and prior to entering a foster home or placement. Mirah's Closet continues this support by working to meet the continuing need of these children. Foster Children and Youth visit Mirah's Closet and "Shop" for free for any essential items and ongoing needs. This includes items from seasonal clothing to toiletries to toys & books.

Your help is greatly needed in the operation of this program and you are invited to join as a member of our Leadership Team. Job Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.):

   Leadership Team members under the Backpacks of Love and Mirah's Closet Program work within the organization to help with things such as:

  • Assist with "Volunteer Days" where volunteers come in to help with sorting donations intended for building Backpacks of Love and Mirah's Closet. On some days, volunteers work with the building Backpacks of Love to ensure we remained stocked with backpacks ready to go out to foster children. Leadership Team members work with volunteers to guide and work with volunteers. This ensures Backpacks of Love contain all essential items and are ready to be received by children entering care and helps to ensure Mirah's Closet remains stocked .
  • Leadership Team Members assist with community events where communities, schools, or other organizations wish to learn more about our Backpacks of Love and Mirah's Closet Programs. Members who are comfortable with public speaking can volunteer to assist with these presentations.
  • Work to keep Mirah's Closet staffed during other events. We do not have set hours for Mirah's Closet, however, the closet is open while other events are taking place. For example, we have monthly events through our Foster Friends program and team members are needed to "staff" the closet and to assist families. 
  • We ask for a commitment of 10 hours a month. This includes working with all programs (hours can be shared between programs and events).

Education and Experience

  • Possess at least a high school diploma

  • Should have some job-related experience, such as working non-profits, leading teams and/or organizations and working with children.


  • Proficient in basic computer applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and internet usage.

  • Organization and planning skills.

  • Strong Public Speaking and Presentation Skills.

  • Have a FULL understanding of each program offered by The Blue Ribbon Project and be ready to answer questions about the organization.

  • Have a STRONG passion for our mission in prevention and education regarding child abuse and child sex offenses.


  • Demonstrated capability to conduct one’s self in a calm and professional demeanor when dealing with the public and/or with difficult situations or when discussing abuse

  • Demonstrated capability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of staff and volunteers

  • Willingness to sometimes adjust hours to accommodate the needs of each program.

  • Pass a full background check

Time Commitments

  • We ask for a commitment of 10 hours per month. These hours can be shared between programs and other events (such as meetings). 

  • Available for special events and training

Due to the sensitive nature of our organization and those we serve, Leadership Team members should be able to pass a background check and participate in an interview process with other members.

Working with The Blue Ribbon Project is an excellent way to make friends, open doors, and be a part of a great organization helping the most vulnerable in our community. 

Each member brings a unique knowledge and skills which complement the mission of The Blue Ribbon Project and help move the organization forward. Leadership Team  members need not have direct knowledge or experience with Child Abuse but can bring personal and professional experience and skills to the forefront and be part of a great team. Members should have a passion to helping abused and neglected children and working with the community.
