Backpacks of Love: A Little Comfort When Everything Changes
Today, somewhere in Maryland, a child is leaving everything familiar behind and entering foster care. Many arrive at an unfamiliar door scared and uncertain, often with almost nothing: no change of clothes, no toothbrush, nothing that feels like home.
This short film shows how a Backpack of Love changes that first night. When a child is being placed, the Department of Social Services notifies The Blue Ribbon Project. A volunteer picks out a backpack matched to the child's age and gender and heads straight for the door. Inside are several days of clothing, toiletries, a book, pajamas that fit, a nightlight, and small comforts that say, "Someone thought about you tonight."
Since 2012, The Blue Ribbon Project has served children affected by abuse and neglect and children and youth in foster care throughout Maryland. Learn more about Backpacks of Love, or help us keep backpacks ready.
